Detroit Riots (jul 23, 1967 – jul 27, 1967)
Description:
Many African Americans lived in Detroit, so when the city was in economic and social strife, many were left unemployed and this helped drive the riot. One of the biggest riots was an immediate response to police brutality. In a very poor black neighborhood in an unlicensed bar where civil rights groups met, there was a raid by police officers early on a Sunday morning. There were 2500 store robberies and fires among the building that resulted in damage of $32 million. Attacks and raids resulted in the deaths of 33 black people and 10 white people.
