Battle of the Somme (jul 1, 1916 – nov 8, 1916)
Description:
The 141-day Battle of the Somme was the deadliest of the war, resulting in over a million fatalities, including around 400,000 killed or missing.
It began on July 1, 1916, when Allied troops, primarily British, sought to alleviate pressure on the French in Verdun by assaulting the Germans hundreds of kilometers to the northwest, along the Somme River.
The five-month fight was the bloodiest in British history, with 20,000 killed or missing in the opening hours alone, and 40,000 injured.
