The leader of the SNCC John Lewis organized the first march from Selma as a part of the Voting Rights Movement. All together there was three Selma marches and the purpose of the demonstrations was part of the voting registration campaign in Selma, in Dallas County, Alabama where there was a record of consistent resistance to black voting. During their demonstration they were met with a lot of violence from the armed state troopers.
