Leonarda (ITA) (jan 1, 1620 – jan 1, 1704)
Description:
• Sections for full chorus alternate with solo passages and instrumental ritornellos. Intricate use of harmonies (diminished-seventh chords, Neapolitan chords, diminished
• triads).
• Counterpoint.
• Word painting.
• Meter change.
• All her masses only have Kyrie, Gloria and Credo.
• Usually double bars, and terminated by a strong cadence.
• Each section typically presents a single verse of text, consistent texture, rhythmic treatment, and melodic style.
• Parallel octaves between voices, heavily doubled thirds in chords (she was not able to hear other composers enough and not able to develop her skills as a musician.)
