Suez Crisis - Luke (oct 29, 1956 – nov 7, 1956)

Description:

To understand the Suez Crisis, it is essential to know what the Suez Canal is and how important it is for the world's economies. The Suez Canal is a vital line between the Meditrainian and Red Seas. This makes trade and exports between Asia and Europe much more accessible and provides a safe route for shipping.

The Suez Crisis occurred when Israeli armed forces pushed Egypt towards the canal, leading the President of Egypt to nationalize the canal. The Israeli troops were backed by England and France (who had majority control over the channel), which caused tension with the United States. Following the Nationalization, French and British troops backed the Israeli Army. Still, in an effort to gain a stronghold in the Middle East, the Soviet Union supplied the opposing Egyptians with arms and aid. The Soviets even treated the use of nuclear power if everyone else backed down.

The United States finally came into play later and urged the Soviets to withdraw their threats and create peace. The United States aided the resolution of the conflict by telling the countries that they would place economic sanctions on them if they continued to push for power.

In the end, Egypt regained control of the canal and reopened it to all in March 1957.
