because i don't want to go back to him. just not sure what the intermediate step here is. anyway, I'm okay. holding up. How's your day?

Oh no! That is really sad news. I'm very sorry to hear that. Would you be OK with me offering condolences to him? As far as talking later, I think all you can do is just be there for him as a friend. No need to talk about all that other stuff right now because he will not be able to process it, which will just be frustrating so no point in doing it. Just give him a hug and tell him you are there for him. That little bit of support will go a long way later when it really is time to discuss the relationship ending.
Call me if you need anything. I'm going to a baseball game but have my phone with me. I love you bitch.

One more thought...if/ when he wants to discuss the relationship status maybe just dance around the subject and let him know that you are happy to talk through things but when the time is right. Now is a time for grieving instead. Something along those
