Marco begins training (jan 1, 1875 – jul 1, 1880)

Description:

"He copies down sections of books, writes out words and symbols he does not understand at first but that become intimately familiar beneath his ink-stained fingers, formed again and again in increasingly steady lines" (Morgenstern 29).

Marco starts his training in preparation for the competition. At first, it is hard to tell what exactly Marco is being taught. Later on the reader learns that he is learning magic, such as runes. The beginner of his training starts his journey through this competition and gives the reader a hint of what to expect from Marco.
