THE SPINNING MULE (INVENTION) (jan 1, 1764 – jan 1, 1779)
Description:
The spinning mule is an invention that had a dramatic effect on textile production during the industrial revolution. A version of this was created in 1764, but was later developed and upgraded in in 1779 by English inventor, Samuel Crompton. The spinning mule works by spinning textile fibers into yarn through a process. Within the process, during the draw stroke, the roving (a long bunch of carbed fibers), is pulled though and twisted and on the return it is wrapped around the spindle. The spinning mule is a combination of the moving carriage of a spinning jenny and the rollers of a water frame. He named it the spinning 'mule' as a mule is a donkey crossed with a donkey stallion and a female horse, a hybrid, which is what his machine is.
