Battle of Stalingrad (aug 23, 1942 – feb 2, 1943)
Description:
The Battle of Stalingrad was an assault that was unsuccessful by Germans on the Soviet Union during World War II on Aug 23, 1942, going into Feb 2, 1943. Invading Stalingrad wasn’t Germany's only plan but they also wanted to take it so that they can cut off all links to Southern Russia and would give them another leg up in the war. Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Germans, wanted Stalingrad because it was named after Joseph Stalin a Soviet Leader and with the land it would be a personal victory for him. The battle ended when the Germans were met by the Red Army defense and with a counterattack circling the German army the Germans surrendered. This was a big loss for Germany and 800,000 German soldiers died with another 1,000,000 Soviet soldiers. This was the farthest extent Germany went into the Soviet Union.
