Description:
The freedom rides took place from May 4, 1961 to Dec 10, 1961. The people who look place in these rides were white and African American civil rights activists. The riders rode through the south as a means of challenging bus segregation laws. They fought against not only the segregation laws in buses but also restaurants, and all public places throughout the South. Their daring rides drew attention to their cause because they were often met with violence or police. The federal government had promised protection of the riders but that didn't mean that they were necessarily safe.Added to timeline:
