The Punitive Era (jan 1, 1935 – jan 1, 1945)
Description:
The Punitive Era was characterized by a belief that prisoners owed a debt to society that only a rigorous period of confinement could repay. Convicts were to be both shunned and securely locked away from society. This was a very lackluster time with little innovation, and there was a very "out of sight out of mind" attitude toward prisoners. Prisoners often tried to escape during this time.
