Cold War (jan 1, 1947 – jan 1, 1991)
Description:
The Cold War followed on the heels of World War II and ended in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This protracted conflict placed two far-reaching questions at the center of global history: Would capitalism or communism dominate Europe and East Asia in the aftermath of war? How would the European colonies and former colonies throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Africa enter the world stage as independent nations? Each of the superpowers sought to dictate the answers, as the United States embarked on an unprecedented engagement with world affairs.
