Battle of the Frontiers (aug 6, 1914 – sep 13, 1914)

Description:

The battle of the Frontiers was a series of battles that took place in Eastern and Northern France and Belgium.

Initially, French troops claimed some land from Germany, however the German troops focused their efforts on invading France via Belgium. The German troops then pursued the British and French troops Southwards to Paris.

The French refocused their efforts on defending the Western flank as the German forces approached Paris. This resulted in the battle of the Marne from 6th to 10th September, a significant victory for the Franco-British armies as the German troops were pushed back.

The battle of the Frontiers is estimated to have caused high casualties and losses on both sides - 329,000 French, 30,000 British and 206,000 German.

Overall, it was a German victory on the Western front that led on to the race to the sea and then a stalemate of trench warfare.
