Egypt New Kingdom (jan 1, 1550 BC – jan 1, 1070 BC)

Description:

During the New Kingdom period, which lasted approximately from 1550-1070 BCE, Egypt expanded its territory to the east, reaching the Euphrates River and to the south, deep into Nubia. This era saw the introduction of the axially planned pylon temple, featuring a large gateway, columnar courtyards, and a hypostyle hall with clerestory lighting, which became a significant architectural innovation of the time. Pharaohs like Hatshepsut and Ramses II erected grand temples to honor their patron gods and themselves after their deaths. However, Akhenaton rejected the traditional Egyptian religion in favor of Aton, the sun disk, and initiated a brief artistic revolution, where undulating curves and anecdotal content replaced the cubic forms and stillness of earlier Egyptian art.
