Cuban Missle Crisis - Luke (oct 16, 1962 – oct 29, 1962)
Description:
In October 1962, a United States spy plane observed Cuba when they noticed something strange. There was what appeared to be a nuclear missile site that the Soviet Union was building. In an effort to not startle the United States citizens, President John F. Kennedy met with advisors secretly and made the decision to place a naval blockade around the island of Cuba. The mission was done in secret up until the 22nd of October, when the American citizens were finally addressed. With the threat of nuclear war closer than it had ever been, there was an agreement made between the Soviet Union and the United States that the Soviets would dismantle their nuclear sites if the US would not invade Cuba. During this time, the US also agreed in a secret contract that they would remove their nuclear missiles from Turkey, but that was not revealed until almost 25 years later. The Soviet nuclear missiles were removed from Cuba, but they continued to funnel arms into the country; due to the heating-up arms race that was actively occurring. The picture shown shows what the Cuban Nuclear site looked like in its early stages of construction.
