Martin Luther (jan 1, 1483 – jan 1, 1546)

Description:

-Studying to become a lawyer, he resolved to become a monk after God saved his life in a thunderstorm

-Living under immense piety, he was grieved by the weight of obtaining righteousness by works

-Upon hearing a call for indulgences, while lecturing through Romans, he was struck by Romans 1:17, that “the righteous shall live by faith”

-Nailed his 95 theses in 1517 on the door of the church in Wittenberg

-Would not recant at the Diet of Worms

-Luther’s main argument was that salvation was not by any tradition, work, or sacrament of the RCC, but by faith alone

-Though others had previously paved the way for Luther’s theology, Luther’s coincidence with the invention of the printing press launched the Reformation in an explosive manner
