3-Articles of confederation (1777) (nov 15, 1777 – mar 9, 1789)
Description:
(1777) First American constitution established the United States as a loose confederation of states under a weak national Congress, which was not granted the power to regulate commerce or collect taxes. A more efficient Constitution replaced the Articles in 1789.
--> first governing document of the U.S. It created a WEAK central government
Weaknesses:
-No executive branch [Americans feared a strong executive government]
-Difficult to pass laws and amend articles
-Each state would have its own currency (too many currency changes--> discourage trade)
-No national army
