Bombing of London (sep 7, 1940 – may 11, 1941)
Description:
In the summer of 1940, germany took france out of the war with a blitzkrieg, taking away britain’s closest ally. With the british waiting for an attack, Germany began their assault on britain's airfields, bases and facilities in August. Hitler still wished for a peace treaty with britain, so he stuck to military facilities, but on August 24th, german bombers accidently hit the capital instead. Britain retaliated and in outrage Hitler planned the blitz, a 57 consecutive day bombing, hitting major british cities. Toward the end of 1940, 15,000 civilians were killed. Germany’s plan was to terrorise the british people into submission. Britain retaliate with the RAF, both sides taking heavy losses.
