Other Information: When Littlefield ran for governor as a Republican in 1880 and no candidate achieved a majority of votes, the General Assembly elected him. Large popular majorities secured his reelection in 1881 and 1882. As Governor, he proposed the creation of a State Industrial School and worded to strengthen public schools.
