Josephus (jan 1, 37 – jan 1, 100)
Description:
Church Historian
-Josephus is the reason we know all about the happenings of Judaism from Christ to the Revolts
-born into a priestly family in Jerusalem
-Led Galilean forces during the first Jewish Revolt (66) and surrendered in 67.
-Gained favor of Roman General Vespasian by prophesying that he would become emperor
-traveled to Rome after 70AD, took on name Titus Flavius Josephus
-In Rome, published his 4 literary works:
"Jewish War", "Jewish Antiquities", "Josephus' Life", "Against Apion"
-In "Antiquities" is the "Testimonium Flavianum" where Josephus seems to indicate Jesus was the Messiah, but it is debated that this was forged. Origen stated that Josephus did not follow Christ, and it seems odd that Josephus would mention Christ as the Messiah, and then not speak of him elsewhere in his works
