Al-Ma'mun (jan 1, 813 – jan 1, 833)
Description:
Al-Ma'mun was an Abbasid caliph. His father was Harun ar-Rashid, although he was an illegitimate son. As a result, Al-Amin his half-brother was named caliph even though Al-Ma'mun clearly commanded far more influence. Ma'mun quickly began to try to overwhelm Al-Amin's power in the west.
Al-Ma'mun founded the House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikmah) which housed not only Arab texts and literature but also translated Roman and Greek works as well. He also is known for creating religious adherence laws unlike his predecessors.
