African Independence Movements (jan 1, 1948 – jan 1, 1975)
Description:
Various African countries seek independence from their colonial occupiers. 90% of African Land was under control of European powers. The imperial powers a) extracted wealth and resources with building little infrastructure; and b) claimed territories that did not match tribal/ cultural/ linguistic/ ethnic boundaries. This led to a long series of civil war, ethnic conflict, corruption, poverty and struggles with the newly created nations. This is still affecting modern Africa today.
