Characteristics of the West: The Mining Frontier
Topic 6.2 (Contextualization) (jan 1, 1849 – 8h 20min, jun 6, 2026 y)
Description:
Mining:
California's gold rush in 1849 inspired many people to travel west for economic opportunities. Many individual miners came looking for gold in mountain streams. Mining companies soon developed as they would employ skilled miners, get expensive equipment, and they had wealthy investors.
Many gold and silver strikes drew people to the west until the 1890s which helped settle the west. Rich strikes caused boomtowns, where miners lived that became overnight saloons, however, many became ghost towns after the gold or silver ran out. A few towns turned into cities where churches, theaters, newspapers, schools, libraries, railroads, and police were added. For example, places like San Francisco, Sacramento, and Denver were all mining towns.
