Radio Télévision des Milles Collines (RTLM)
(Polarization) (jul 1, 1993 – aug 1, 1994)
Description:
The Radio Télévision des Milles Collines was a private radio station that was popular among young people. Was used by Hutu leaders to advance extremist Hutu messages and anti-Tutsi information.
The RTLM is a significant radio station in the genocide of the Tutsi people. Many young people would tune into the radio station to listen to music. However, a lot of the time they would use the network to insult and reinforce propaganda against Tutsis. They would broadcast extreme messages of hate towards Tutsis and talk about killing and harming them.
It re-enforces the ideology that Tutsis should be killed to a young and able bodied audience who can kill people. The RTLM used the radio to spread hate because many people in Rwanda were illiterate and wouldn't be able to understand. They knew that if they broadcasted it more people would hear it and more people could understand it
