Muhammed (jan 1, 570 – jan 1, 632)
Description:
Muhammed was the founder of Islam. He was born in Mecca and was a trader. He married Khadijah a wealthy woman who worked as a trading agent and his boss. With her he had Fatima and Ali who would become key figures within early Islam.
According to Islam, Muhammed received the words written in the Quran from God in a cave on Mount Hira. He received these revelations through visions from the angel Gabriel. Muhammed was illiterate and so he orally passed down these revelations first to his wife and then to his growing number of followers.
Following the death of his wife, Khadija, he married again and became polygamous. One of these wives was Aisha the daughter of Abu Bakr, another central figure in early Islam. He also lead his followers on the first hajj as a result of persecution in Mecca. This journey was later marked the beginning of the Islamic Calendar.
