Description:
Also known as Artaxerxes, Ardashir I was the founder of the Sassanian empire. He defeated Artabanus the last king of the Arsacid dynasty to gain control of the Parthian empire. He immediately began to expand his power. In a war with Rome he conquered several cities including Hatra. He also made Zoroastrianism the official state religion and was instrumental in establishing a set of holy texts and unified doctrine.
