What: World War I has been referred to as “the first modern war.” Machine guns, tanks, aerial combat and radio communications were introduced on a massive scale during World War I, making it much more deadly than previous wars. Chemical warfare was also introduced.
Where: Germany began fighting World War I on two fronts ( Western and Eastern ), invading France through neutral Belgium in the west and confronting Russia in the east.
When: On June 28th 1914 World War 1 was declared and it ended on November 11 1918
Why: Ultimately conflicts over alliances, European Imperialism, Serbian Nationalism, the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand all played roles in starting World War l.
