Reagan Presidency (dec 30, 1980 – jan 1, 1989)
Description:
Conservative attitude to civil rights. Appointed fewer black people to the federal administration than any president since Eisenhower.
His presidency coincided with an economic slowdown.
Reductions in welfare payments hit black people particularly hard. In 1980 black people were 11% of the population but were high recipients of Aid to Families with Dependent Children (43%) , housing subsidies (34%) and food stamps (35%).
Reagan's cuts to expenditure impacted most severly on teh pporest black families (he cut $20 billion from the welfare budget)
