Sassanid Empire (jan 1, 224 – jan 1, 642)
Description:
The Sassanid Empire was the third dynasty of Persia. It was founded by Ardashir I when he overthrew Artabanus V. He continued on to capture land from Rome including the city of Hatra. Under Ardashir I Zoroastrianism became a state religion which he helped to canonize and define a unified doctrine for. The regional governors were often Zoroastrian clergy and were overseen by the king.
The Sassanid Empire was a central trade route between the Mediterranean and Asia by way of the Silk Road. The Empire also was a center of learning and was home to the Sassanian University and Medical Institute. In addition the cavalry and warriors of the Sassanids would later be adapted as a model for the European knights.
The best known figures from the Sassanid Empire include Shapur I, Shapur II, and Braham V. The Sassanids were later conquered by the Arabs in 642.
