Peloponnesian War (jan 1, 431 BC – jan 1, 404 BC)

Description:

Following the Greco-Persian Wars, Athens and Sparta became the central power figures in Greece. Athens was the leader of the Delian League, while the Spartans lead the Peloponnesian League. The two city-states' rivalry ultimately lead to the Peloponnesian War. The Spartans with their hoplites and the Athenians with their naval force advanced on one another. They quickly were forced to adopt elements of one another's tactics. The Athenians were ultimately defeated and Athens was razed to the ground several times. Nonetheless, the Athenians would eventually be the ones to tell history. Thucydides wrote about the wars and the ongoing tensions between the sides.
