Greco-Persian Wars (jan 1, 498 BC – jan 1, 448 BC)

Description:

Also known as the Persian Wars, this was a series of wars between the Persians and the Greeks. The war started in response to the Ionian rebellion within the Persian Empire. The Ionians were a Greek city-state or other times considered a Greek colony which had recently come under Persian rule. Phrynichus immortalized these revolts in his play: the "Sack of Mitetus." Other Greek city-states stepped in to support the rebellion which incited Darius' and Xerxes' invasions of Greece in retaliation to this breach of sovereignty. Herodotus later eulogized the the wars in his book Histories.
