-Germany hit hard: US loans recalled --> fragility of Weimar economic structure revealed
-unemploment: 1.3 million (Sep. 1929) --> 3 million (Sep. 1930) --> peak at over 6 million / 1/3 of all German workers (early 1933)
-said to have "put the wind in the sails of National Socialism" - economic misery said to give rise to political extremism (increase in support for KPD as well)
-Nazi propaganda: exploiting misery of German population in crisis to gain support, e.g. promise of "Arbeit, Freiheit und Brot" ("Work, Freedom and Bread")
