-Included the National Origins Act ("Quota Act"; set quotes for the different immigrant countries; --Mostly Scottish and English were allowed but few Jews and Catholics)
-Was prompted by the fear of large numbers of new immigrants and culturally distinctive communities giving rise to a nativist movement
-Initiated notably in 1882 with the Chinese Exclusion Act
-Business owners fought against immigration restriction because they wanted the cheap labor
