Manifest Destiny is the idea that the U.S. is destined by God to expand its dominion and spread democracy and capitalism across the entire North American continent. This philosophy drove 19th-century U.S. territorial expansion. It justified the removal of Native Americans from their homes. The rapid expansion intensified the issue of slavery.
