Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal (jan 1, 1394 – jan 1, 1460)
Description:
Led expansion on the coast of Africa on the basis of christianity and trade. Created a school of navigators and went to the west coast of Africa in search for gold. he took Africans as slaves and found gold along the southern hump of west Africa (gold coast). Had contact with the state of Bakongo near the Zaire (Congo) river for trade of gold, ivory and slaves. He also built forts along the coast.
