The Black Codes (apr 5, 1865 – jan 1, 1867)
Description:
The black codes revealed determination of southern whites to keep black people in an inferior position. Codes varied but included such things as:
- forbidding inter-racial marriages
- forbidding a black person from giving evidence against a white person in court (segregation)
Although the Republicans successfully outlawed these laws with the 14th Amendment, the Codes anticipated Jim Crow laws passed once reconstruction had ended.
