Vietnam War (jan 8, 1955 – jan 29, 1975)

Description:

The Vietnam War began as a conflict between North and South Vietnam. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy increased U.S. aid to South Vietnam against the Viet Cong who were the communists. President Lyndon B. Johnson increased U.S. military support. Congress gave Johnson war-making power in 1964 and the U.S. began regular bombing raids. In March 1965, Johnson sent U.S. combat troops into battle in Vietnam, by June 82,000, by July another 100,000, and then 100,000 more in 1966. The U.S. withdrew forces in 1973. Communist forces ended the war by seizing control of South Vietnam in 1975.
