-border states+northern cities
-formed during civil war; spread in Confederacy
-grassrooots wing of Radical Republicanism
-pressured congress to uphold justice for freepeople
-taught freedmen how to vote and analyze politics
-had parades and military drills


same time: black women+northern allies in Freedmen's Aid to fund schools, get teachers/supplies for formerly enslaved fams
