Description:
Peter the Great built on tradition of territorial expansion and state-building. He gained sea access. He allied with Denmark and Poland against Sweden in the Great Northern War, which he eventually won. He increased military power and established various schools. He also increased the service requirements of commoners, promoted St. Petersburg (the new capital that thousands of peasants slaved away at), and encouraged the spread of Western culture.Added to timeline:
