Description:

Ivan the Terrible partook in wide-ranging reforms which included a centralized administration, church councils that systemized the church's affairs, and the first national assembly. He persecuted suspected opposition and replaced them with a new service nobility. He restricted peasants, by tying them more firmly to the land, and the urban class, by tying them to their jobs and the land. He also conquered Kazan and Astrakhan and the region near the Volga River.
