French Rule, Massimiliano and Francesco Sforza (jan 2, 1500 – jan 1, 1525)

Description:

Massimiliano Sforza was installed as Duke of Milan in 1512 after the capture of Milan by the Holy League, supported by Swiss militia, from Louis XII of France. In 1515, after French victory at the Battle of Marignano, he was imprisoned by the troops of Francis I. When Charles V of Austria reconquered Milan from the French in 1521, Massimiliano's brother Francesco was appointed Duke of Milan. Francesco fought at the Battle of Bicocca in 1522 on the side of the Holy Roman Empire, but switched sides in 1525, joining the League of Cognac along with Francis I of France, Pope Clement VII and Florence, losing out to the Holy Roman Empire.
