Fourth Venetian-Ottoman War (jun 23, 1570 – mar 7, 1573)

Description:

The Ottomans turned their attention to Cyprus in 1568, and in 1570 demanded its cession. They took Nicosia, Kyrenia surrendered, and they took Famagusta, gaining control of all of Cyprus. Venice looked for allies during this time, and struggled until managing to form a Holy League with Pope Pius V, including Spain with the Venetian promise to aid Spain in North Africa. The Christian fleet assembled at Messina, and soon both sides sought decisive engagement at the Battle of Lepanto, which resulted in a crushing victory for the Christian fleet, ending Ottoman naval hegemony with their fleet's destruction and death of their naval experts. Still, Venice could not retake Cyprus, and the peace treaty of 1573 confirmed Cyprus as an Ottoman province.
