During this period, Venice became wealthy through its control of trade between Europe and the Levant, and began to expand into the Adriatic Sea and beyond. Build shipyard called Venetian Arsenal, with which they built fleets to control Eastern Mediterranean. First exchange business in the world was started. Gained extensive trade privilege in Byzantine Empire, often providing them with a navy. Veneitans are the main target in the Massacre of the Latins in Constantinople on 1182. There is a major rise of Venetian power as a result of the Fourth Crusade, both as a reward of their aid of the Crusaders from the Partition of the Byzantine Empire following the Sack of Constantinople. In 13th and early 14th century, Venice signs a trade treaty with Mongols, send fleets to attack Genoese fleets a few times, and fights a Salt War with Padua. Venice faced difficulties in the east due to Louis I of Hungary in the 14th century. He made an initial attempt to free Zara, before forming an alliance to attack the Dalmatian coast. Venice was forced to sign the Treaty of Zara ceding its Dalmatian possessions.
