Orseolos (jan 1, 991 – jan 1, 1026)

Description:

Pietro I was conciliatory but ineffective, though his son Pietro II later reigns beginning 991. Attention focused on control of Adriatic Sea, not mainland. Inner strife is pacified, and trade with Byzantines is boosted by a treaty with Emperor Basil II freeing their traders from taxation. Venice assume key role of balance between Byzantine and Holy Roman Empires. Pietro's son Otto becomes doge on his death in 1008, and control over the Adriatic is strengthened in Otto's expedition in 1017.
