First Crusade (jul 1, 1097 – aug 12, 1099)
Description:
Genoese fleet transported and provided naval support to the crusaders, mainly during the 1098 Siege of Antioch, and forged an alliance with Bohemond after capturing the city and him becoming ruler. Genoese crossbowmen acted as support units in the siege of Jerusalem. Genoa would return with the relics of Saint John the Baptist, many settlements in Middle East and favorable commercial treaties as a reward for providing military support.
