Effects of Irish Migration: native-born Americans got mad about wages (companies used immigrants to break strikes and reduce pay), temperance, and their retaining of the German language and their patronization, catholicism (lots of northerners thought the pope was an authoritarian who would support "slave power", many didn't like celibacy or claims from The Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk in 1836 about SA and infanticide),mob violence against African Americans/temperance parades/abolitionism, electoral politics w/ dem party

effects of German migration: ppl didn't like their socialism/abolitionism (supported Abe Linclon)/ideas of free soil
