Montgomery Bus Boycott (dec 5, 1955 – dec 20, 1956)

Description:

Initiated by the arrest of Rosa Parks who refused to give up her seat to a white passenger in defiance to the segregation laws of the time, the Montgomery bus boycott was led by Martin Luther King Jr. and lasted 13 months.

Signifiance: The boycott was successful in leading to the desegregation of public buses in the city. This was important as an early victory in the Civil Rights Movement. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was also significant as a demonstration of the power of nonviolent mass protest, serving as an example for following events in the Movement.

Quote:
"I think the Montgomery bus boycott initiated an era of self-determination" - Joseph Lowery

"I had no idea that history was being made. I was just tired of giving up"- Rosa Parks

"...one elderly woman summed it up for the rest. When asked after several weeks of walking whether she was tired, she answered: "My feet is tired, but my soul is at rest" - Martin Luther Kjng
