Period 6: Westward Expansion & Antebellum Era 1828 - 1860 (jan 1, 1828 – jan 1, 1860)
Description:
Enduring Understanding: As Manifest Destiny motivated westward expansion in the United States, the debate over slavery became fiercer as Northern and Southern states grappled for political power. The conflicts over whether to allow slavery in the new Western states led to bloody conflicts such as the Mexican-American War and Bleeding Kansas, and eventually led to the Civil War when the South seceded to preserve slavery.
The Second Industrial created many more factories in the United States. More people were working in factories which also in turn created pollution and smoke (a mix of fog and smoke). In addition, it led to Urbanization. More people were coming to the United States and the North in pursuit of jumps. Communities began to form where certain races and groups would live in certain places (Irish for example). As a result of this increased immigration, standard living conditions were on the decline. Houses were packed living conditions were dirty and/or unsafe. This caused plumbing systems to be created.
