Period 5: The Jeffersonian Republic 1800 - 1828 (jan 1, 1800 – jan 1, 1828)

Description:

Enduring Understanding: The Second Great Awakening impacted American society by reviving Protestant religious ideals and popularizing the belief that everyone, regardless of social class, could achieve redemption through doing good deeds and encouraging others to convert to Protestantism. These ideals led to the rise of reform movements in various fields, such as education, prisons and asylums, abolition, and feminism.

The civil war occurred because of differences in political and economical states, the structure of the federal government, and slavery. The North and the South have differences being the South being agricultural and the North being industrial. There was also a debate about the federal government being too powerful and removing power from the states which caused fear of tyranny. Slavery was also a big problem also because the North wanted to abolish slavery and the South wanted to keep slavery. The South believed that slavery was a right and would die to keep it despite the North wanting to only contain it and not abolish it.

Reconstruction allowed for the union to fully be united with the North and South. The South now had to adopt anti-slavery ideologies. The military inhabited the South in order to enforce the new laws and they were broken up until then. They also had to now follow the union's gov now the US gov. This caused tensions because as soon as the military was removed they adopted modern anti-slavery ideals.
