Period 3: Revolutionary Era 1754 - 1783 (jan 1, 1754 – jan 1, 1783)

Description:

Enduring Understanding: The end of salutary neglect as a result of the French and Indian war led the colonists to declare independence. They garnered support for independence through a variety of means including art and idea pamphlets based on things such as the First Great Awakening and the Enlightenment. However, these ideas of liberty and equality were not inclusive.

3 factors that led to the revolutionary war
- no representation in parliament and an increase in taxes
-the Boston massacre
- the Boston tea party

The articles of Confederation had weaknesses that involved no central leadership (central gov), congress could not tax, congress had no power to enforce the law, the consent of 9/13 colonies was needed, and congress could not regulate trade. The states themselves had more power over themselves than congress did as a whole which allowed for more difficult communications. 9/13 colonies needed to agree on a law which made it difficult to pass laws because they could not make the same decision. Congress couldn't tax the colonies which meant they had to suffer through debt since they could not pay it off. Each regulated trade between each other which cause the increase and unbalanced tariffs the colonies imposed.
